Helen Martin

Hello, my name is Helen Martin and I teach art to Kindergarten and Grade 1. I meet with the teachers regularly to integrate art into the curriculum.

The focus of the art program is exploration of the children's creative expression. The program is divided into two parts: morning and afternoon classes.

The morning art classes focus on projects that relate to classroom themes. During this time students develop artistic skills and vocabulary, work on following directions, practice working as a group and participate in class discussions about art work.

The afternoon art classes are a time for individual exploration and experimentation. During this time students select from a variety of activities that include choices such as: drawing, painting, building, play dough, weaving, color mixing and computer art. This time allows students to further explore an art medium they enjoy without the pressure to produce a finished product. It can also be a time for them to practice skills introduced during the morning classes.
