An African Village

Two of Lynn's students, Destiney and India, decided they wanted to do a special project. They asked if they could make and African village. The girls had been inspired by the illustrations from a folktale read in class. The folktale comes from Sri Lanka and depicts traditional African homes like the ones the girls constructed here. India and Destiney's plans became ambitious and they decided they needed extra help. So they invided their friend, Nilka, to participate.

The project was organized by an RPI intern, Wynette Venkersammy, who has worked in Lynn's class since September. This team spent many hours planning and creating this scene. The village is organized around a fire, the central gathering place. The largest building is the village's school. Boats are at the ready for fishing trips and transportation. A patch of earth has been planted with crops.

Wynette and the girls devoted extra time during recess and after school to this project. We hope you enjoy their beautiful work!
